I Am Watching “Twenty-One Rubies”
On the artistic and cinematographic quality of the work I shall leave Mirel Palada to give us his informed opinion.
On the story… I can only say that it is a heavily romanticised one. Excessively so, even!
Romanian reality is far blacker than the director attempts to capture.
Far, far blacker… and that only from what I know, and I do not begin to encompass the extent of the darkness of Romanian society.
“LIFE BEATS THE FILM” is my only (interim) conclusion.

Instead of sitting three hours in front of the screen, we might better have been told it in three seconds from the start.
Until the last minutes I should have said it was a prosecutor-cultist film… no, it is merely Kövesi-cultist.
At the risk of being stoned in the public square, I shall sincerely give my opinion (although I was wisely advised not to), as I have always done: weak, very weak! The only remarkable moment was the one with the conversation between the character played by the master Vișan and the “heroine prosecutor”. That is all!
Now you may begin the recital of curses.
Post-postscript: the height of it is that the film does not even partly capture the problems within the Church.
Generalised simony has been known for decades… but there are others which even I know, who am not a priest. Certainly, learned from priests and former seminarians, but some of them far, far blacker than those shown in the film. With names and surnames, with places, with dates… but I shall never tell them!
Why?
Because the church is not the hierarchs, just as Romania is not the “leaders” and the political hacks.
The church is us; Romania is us.
For which reason I shall never be able to throw slops over the whole faithful and/or Romanian people for the sake of a few pieces of sewage who sit temporarily at the head of the “representative” Institutions.
There is here an extremely fine limit, a fundamental distinction that must be made… the operation of separating the act of social justice from the act of desacralising and defiling the church must be performed *suaviter magno cum ingenio*, the risk of pushing the people into scandal and error in times so troubled being immense.
And 21 Rubies, unfortunately, did not manage it! Instead it campaigned for Kövesi…
A pity!
Postscript via Manuela Hărăbor: “A neo-Marxist piece of filth. And a failed film from the cinematographic point of view, extremely badly made. The denigration of the Orthodox Church is part of the progressive agenda. The fact that it was filmed in two periods of time, six years ago and last year, on a new script meant to be a continuation of the first, says a great deal. The major financing came last year; I do not even ask from where, because it is obvious. Personally I am ashamed that I let myself be duped into being part of the cast.”
