In Vain (a poem)
In Vain
In vain do you fence in the word, / in vain do you indoctrinate our thought, / in vain do you stop up our sight, / in vain do you hide the memory.
In vain do you cast us into torments, / in vain do you urge us into folly, / in vain do you curse our fathers, / in vain do you say no to life…
In vain, you loathsome vipers! / In vain. Beware the pitchforks!
In vain… the heart does not keep silent. / And the Truth shall make us / free.
I have come back.
There whence I never departed: to your side, to the side of my friends.
Postscript: “Legend has it that this spectacle has upon cretins the effect that incense has upon demons.” — via Radu Iliescu
