I Wrote to Greta
I have written to Greta… Which Greta? Greta Thunberg, of course. I have called upon her to come to the aid of the Danube Delta.
Let us see whether she hears us…
It is a test of political correctness, in the end. Let us see which takes priority: the Delta, or “Slava Ukraini”?
Here is my “little letter”, which I left under several dozen of her posts as well as at the address given on her Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/gretathunbergsweden):
Greta, come and save the Delta!
My name is Dan MV Chitic, I am a lawyer and I am writing to you from Romania.
I am calling on you in this way to ask for your help in an environmental problem of planetary gravity: the Danube Delta, a UNESCO site and Biosphere Reserve, is being irreparably affected at this very moment by the dredging works carried out illegally by Ukraine on the Bystroye canal.
According to an expert on the Danube Delta, Professor Alfred Vespremeanu, Director of the “Sf. Gheorghe” Marine and River Research Station, who explained in the press that “if you dredge the Bystroye canal, then the first consequence in terms of hydrology will be that this arm will draw more water from the collateral arms. It is about the old Stambul, which is the largest branch in the Chilia Delta, and then the Ochakiv branch, which is in an erosion phase anyway.”
“If the entire Chilia branch were to deepen up to Izmail (…) it would slowly draw more water from the Tulcea branch, from the Romanian branches — Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe — which is not desired.”
The specialist’s conclusion is simple: “(Dredging the Bystroye Canal) is an unacceptable pressure on one of the few deltas that remain very beautiful and natural.”
In other words, at this very moment illegal work is being done that is destroying one of the most spectacular and valuable ecosystems in Europe and in the world.
That is why I appeal to you, dear Greta, and call you to Romania to come to the aid of the Danube Delta, thus placing your entire reputation and media power behind the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.
Thank you in advance for the help you will give to the Danube Delta!
