On Death Sentences
We live in a world where almost nowhere may judges condemn men to death, not even on solid evidence,
and yet certain politicians — presidents or prime ministers — condemn to death and execute men — politicians, soldiers or scientists — together with their families and their neighbours, without any trial and without any evidence, but for the simple reason that these disagree with their opinions and their visions, or with the policies they promote.
Let it not be thought that I disagree with these valuable statesmen of world stature — that is all I should need! — I merely wish to say that our world is full of paradoxes and of sickening hypocrisies!
I do not even know why I said that… I do not agree with what I said either!
May all the adversaries of the civilised world die in torment — let it be noted that I said so!
And let it further be noted that I demand that all these democratic and profoundly humanist politicians, who are cleansing the world of wicked men, ought to receive the Nobel Prize for peace!
Did I say “peace”?
I beg your pardon!
War is peace!
Freedom is slavery!
Ignorance is strength!
